Responsible for
Science curriculum leadership across the provision; no direct line-management responsibility unless subsequently agreed. Running Beech and Beech + KS4 and KS5 programme in the school provision
Purpose of the role
To provide engaging, ambitious and highly personalised teaching for KS4 and KS5 students working primarily within our Beech and Beech+ curriculum pathways (GCSE equivalent level 1/level 2), and to take a leading role in the development, coordination and quality assurance of Science across Fable House.
The postholder will use project-based learning to help students develop subject knowledge, transferable skills, confidence and independence. They will ensure that learning is accessible to young people with a wide range of SEND while maintaining high expectations for their progress and achievement.
Come and teach somewhere that does education differently
Fable House is an independent specialist education provider for young people whose needs have not been successfully met within mainstream or traditional specialist settings.
Our students are capable, creative and curious, but many have experienced disrupted education or extended periods away from learning. They may have autism, ADHD, PDA profiles, trauma-related needs, SEMH needs or specific learning differences. Our role is to create the conditions in which they can feel safe, reconnect with education and recognise their own potential.
We are looking for an imaginative and adaptable KS4/KS5 Teacher to work primarily with students following our in house Beech and Beech+ curriculum pathways (GCSE equivalent Level1/Level2). The successful candidate will also take the lead on Science across the provision, supporting the development, coordination and quality of Science teaching and learning.
This is not a conventional classroom teaching role.
Our curriculum is highly personalised and delivered through meaningful, interest-led projects. Students develop knowledge and skills by investigating real questions, solving problems, producing purposeful outcomes and making connections across different subject areas. Science already runs strongly through many of our projects, including health, the environment, conservation, food, horticulture, technology and practical life skills.
Teaching takes place predominantly one-to-one and in very small groups, with group delivery used wherever it is appropriate for the students involved. You will need to be able to balance clear curriculum intentions with the flexibility to respond to each learner’s needs, interests, communication style and capacity on the day.
You do not need to be a qualified teacher, although QTS or an appropriate teaching qualification would be desirable. More important is that you understand how young people with SEND learn and can translate subject knowledge into practical, engaging and accessible learning experiences. Achieving QTS with us through a salaried training position is something we are open to discussing.
We are particularly interested in candidates who:
At Fable House, we believe that everyone has the potential to learn and achieve; that all behaviour communicates a need; that each new day is a fresh start; that we all do our best within our capacity at the time; and that everyone has skills they can develop and share.
If you are excited by the opportunity to help shape a curriculum rather than simply deliver one, we would love to hear from you.
Fable House is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be subject to safer recruitment checks, including an enhanced DBS check and appropriate employment, qualification, fitness to work and identity checks.
